Viking Journey Trilogy

In this series of three paintings I explore the subtle but ever increasing presence of technology in the vast and never ending journey of the psyche through life's many experiences, from the real and mythical past to the real and virtual now. The Viking ships symbolize both my Norwegian cultural heritage as well as the archetypal journey through life. The journey begins with the 'Dreamboat of the Unconscious' which symbolizes the watery element of the unconscious mind of dreams, hopes and fears, then continues on to the meeting of intellect, reason and higher thought in the lofty conscious mind in 'Starship of the Mind'. The journey eventually ends with the fusion of intuition and reason, experience and knowledge and dreams and wakefulness at a place we call wisdom in 'Paradise Found'. But at various points along this journey technology is slowly infiltrating our psyche and humanity, and the past and future are blending to create new meanings and symbols. Our physical world is being transformed into a world of endless virtual worlds and journeys where it is becoming harder to draw the line between what is real and what is not.
